Curly Extensions Hair Care

7 Tips to Care for Natural Curly Hair Extensions and Weaves

Natural curly hair extensions are a great way to add volume and length to your naturally curly hair, and they can be used to accommodate many gorgeous hairstyles. However, whether your extensions are sewn in or detachable, maintaining their texture and luster can be challenging in summers.

The same goes for weaves that tend to become brittle and frizzy when the weather becomes increasingly hot and humid. So if you want your naturally curly hair extensions to look and feel their best, here’s what you need to do:

Curly hair is a lot more prone to dryness, frizz, and knotting than straight hair. Therefore, you should wash and condition them at least twice a week.

Choose a mild moisturizing shampoo and conditioner, preferably sulfate-free. This will help keep your curls hydrated for longer, so they appear soft, smooth, and vibrant.

In addition, the use of a leave-in conditioner is recommended to lock in moisture and prevent flyaways.

Air Dry

Allow your curly hair extensions/weave to dry naturally instead of using artificial heat. Slow drying in cool air will preserve the normal consistency and reduce frizz. Apply styling methods that do not use heat unless you want your curls to look flat and dull.

Say ‘No’ to Alcohol

You may enjoy all the seasonal cocktails you want, as long as you are not driving; DUI charges are not worth the risk. But, getting back on topic, stay away from hair products that have high alcohol content. Given that the chemical composition of alcohol promotes dehydration, it is indeed disastrous for curly hair.

If you need something to touch up your hair or aid in styling, opt for an alcohol-free hairspray or a moisturizing oil/serum.

Night Care

If you remove your curly extensions at night, make sure to store them in a cool and dry place or an airtight container. You may hang them indoors to prevent knots and tangles. If it is a weave or sewn-in extensions, you may wrap up your hair in a silk cloth to preserve its texture.

If you are uncomfortable bundling up your hair in bed, use a satin pillow cover to avoid friction and dehydration, which is familiar with cotton sheets.

Detangling Routine

If your extensions/weave gets entangled, do not use a brush on them; hairbrushes are just not meant for curly hair. Also, do not attempt any detangling while the hair is dry, or it will cause damage and breakage. Instead, dampen the curls and then detangle with a wide-tooth comb for best results.

Curly hair is not made for touching and teasing; they do best when let loose and unbothered. Fight the urge to pat your hairs or comb your fingers through them again and again.

There is no need to brush them either, as the thin brush bristles mess up the texture and cause puffiness.

Put them up/braid them.

If your weave/extensions have a lot of lengths, it is recommended to braid or tie them up on hot and humid days. Braids help lock moisture and preserve the shape of curls. Loose and messy up-dos are excellent for curly hair, as they look adorable and prevent hair from being a frizzy nuisance.
